1931.02.18 First Indian Pigeongramm
1931-02-18: FIRST INDIAN PIGEONGRAM between Asanol and Calcutta in commemoration of the first flight between Allahabad and Nani-Junction. The event was organised by the Calcutta Homing Pigeon Club. The pigeons flew 132 miles, each one carrying between two and eight flimsies, tightly rolled up and inserted in tiny aluminium holders attached to the birds legs. Once the pigeons reached Calcutta, the flimsies were put inside envelopes, specially prepared for the occasion, bearing a mark reading "FIRST INDIAN "PIGEONGRAM" and the drawing of a pigeon. Each cover had the name of the pigeon marked by a rubber-stamp in violet ink. Only 42 flimsies are known to have been sent. Here is a letter sent from Park Street, Calcutta, carried by the carrier pigeon "CUSHY." At most, only seben copies of this type exist—presumably fewer—making it RRR!
