Einzelbelege

Highlight der Auktion
1904 New Zealand
"flimsy" sent by The Great Barrier Pigeongram Service, showing the handstamp in violet with the authenticating signature of J. Reg. Walker. From 1904 the adhesive stamps were rarely used and the service ceased in 1908. A rare and unusual item. After 1904, the populatin of the Great Barrier Island dwindled considerably because of mines closing down. That meant a reduced use of the pigeon post after that year. The rival concerns decried each other´s stamps; the Post and Telegraph Departement disowned them both. Disparaging remarks about the stamps appearing in the "Australian Philatelist" in 1899 were reprintend in "British stamp Philatelist" also brought the stamps into disrepute among British philatelists. This led to a reduced demand for them. The sale of the stamps was an important means by which the owners could recoup the costs of their operations. When the stamps failed to sell as expected, no more were printed. Once more, messages were sent on pieces of tissue paper, but without stamps. Mostly, they bore an undated cancellation. RR!!
