1955.07.27 Köln > Tel Aviv
1955-07-27: Tsirbanova, Bulgaria. Aircraft: Lockheed Constellation L-149 (4X-AKC) El Al. Route: London, Great Britain – Vienna, Austria – Tel Aviv, Israel. Pilots: Captain Stanley R. Hinks, First Officer Pinhas Ben Porat, Radio Operator Rafi Goldman & Flight Engineer Sydney Chalmers. The flight took off from Vienna at 02:53 for the last leg of the flight. The flight proceeded normally until over Yugoslavia. The airplane was following airway Amber 10 at FL180. The flight strayed off the airway and the crew misidentified the Skopje NDB, at which point the flight changed the heading to 142 degrees. This put the plane on a course to the Yugoslav/Bulgarian border. After straying into Bulgarian airspace, the flight was attacked by two Bulgarian MiG-15 fighter aircraft. The aircraft began a descent and was attacked for a second time at an altitude of 8,000 feet. The airplane was now on fire as it descended for an emergency landing. After approximately five minutes, a third attack took place at an altitude of about 2,000 feet. As a result of this last attack, the aircraft broke up in mid-air. The investigation revealed that the plane fell, burning, east of the village of Tsirbanova, Bulgaria, in the Strimon Valley. All occupants of the plane, fifty one passengers and seven crew members, were killed. The recovered mail bears a three line blue-gray cachet applied in Israel (Translation: This cover was recovered from the El Al airplane that was shot downover Bulgaria on 27.7.1955.) Price: F = 351 - 500 $
