1944.11.29 LUFTHANSA St. Gallen > Stockholm
1944-11-29: Falsterbo, Sweden. Aircraft: Focke Wulf FW200 Condor “Friesland” (D-ARHW) LUFTHANSA. Route: Berlin, Germany – Stockholm, Sweden. Pilots: Paul Gutschmidt, pilot, Ernst Breitenbach, pilot, Fritz Brauner, radio operator & Wolfgang Lenz, radio operator. The flight was on its normal route from Berlin to Stockholm, which took it via the southwestern tip of Sweden south of Malmo. When over Falsterbo, the aircraft was mistaken as an enemy aircraft by a German military patrol boat and was shot down. The aircraft fell into a mine field, so the cause has never been determined. The mariners evidently thought that they were being attacked by an enemy plane. German patrol boats were operating in the Baltic, with the Danish island of Zealand to the west and Germany to the south. The captain of the ship, even after the war, denied that his ship had shot the plane down. The direct route from Berlin to Stockholm, would have taken the flight along the east coast of Sweden. It is assumed that the Swedes would not allow it to fly the shorter route up their east coast with its naval bases, for security reasons. According to the Lufthansa accident report, the flight was carrying 627 kilos of mail. Most of the known covers are from Switzerland. Special labels and cachets wereapplied on the recovered mail. | Aug. Giger & Co. St. Gallen: Firmen-Flugpostbrief St. Gallen > Stockholm mit entsprechendem Klebezettel und OKW-Zensur rückseitig.
