1937-11-19: "Postamt Wien 1, Abt. 6 am 19.11.1937 (handschriftlich vom 5.10.1937 korrigiert) Die Sendung wurde bei einem Flugzeugunglück beschädigt.": Klebezettel rückseitig auf Kuvert ab WIEN 1 19.XI.37. Aircraft: Junkers JU.52 (OO-AUB) SABENA. Route: Munich - Frankfurt, Germany – Brussels - Ostende, Belgium -London, Great Britain. Pilots: A. Lambotte, pilot, M. Courtois, radio operator & I. Lansmans, enginee. The aircraft left Frankfurt at 5:30 p.m. for Brussels. Due to very heavy fog, a landing was not possible and the plane continued its flight to Ostende, where it had to embark two passengers for London. Besides the flight crew, there were eight passengers. At Ostende, the fog was also very heavy when the plane arrived at about 2:45 p.m. It turned twice around the airport. It tried to land but struck one of the chimneys ofthe “Briquetterie Nationale” at Stene, with its right wing. It crashed and caught fire. All occupants were burned to death. A very small part of the mail was recovered. At least three covers have been recorded.
